How to Prepare for IES Exam




The IES exam consists of three stages: Preliminary, Mains, and Personality Test. The Preliminary stage has two objective-type papers: Paper-I (General Studies and Engineering Aptitude) and Paper-II (Engineering Discipline). The Mains stage has two conventional-type papers: Paper-I and Paper-II (Engineering Discipline). The Personality Test is an interview that assesses your suitability for the service.


The total marks for the Preliminary stage are 500, for the Mains stage are 600, and for the Personality Test are 200. The final merit list is prepared based on the marks obtained in the Mains stage and the Personality Test. The candidates who qualify the Preliminary stage are eligible to appear for the Mains stage, and those who qualify the Mains stage are eligible to appear for the Personality Test.


The eligibility criteria for the IES exam are as follows:



  • You must be a citizen of India or a subject of Nepal or Bhutan or a Tibetan refugee who came to India before January 1, 1962 or a person of Indian origin who migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries, Vietnam or Ethiopia with the intention of permanently settling in India.



  • You must have a degree in engineering from a recognized university or institution or equivalent qualification.



  • You must be between 21 and 30 years of age as on January 1 of the year of examination. However, there are certain relaxations in age limit for candidates belonging to reserved categories.
